Fresh Cherries in the Morning

Today my family rose early and went to work on our little garden we have planted out at Mom and Dad's farm. To our delight, Dad's cherry tree was ripe and there were plenty of cherries since there was no frost this year. There's nothing quite like fresh cherries in the morning. It was still hot and humid enough even at 7AM to swim in your own sweat just hoeing the plants. We planted corn, onions, watermelon, sunflowers, peas, beans, cucumber, squash, muskmelon, and garlic. (Only one garlic plant came up. It's our first time trying garlic and all I've heard about it is that it is tricky.) We planted some "volunteer" tomatoes from Dad's raised beds up by his house today and weeded / hoed around the rest. Some of the peas and beans washed out in the early rains so there's some voids in those rows and there's a couple of empty spots left as well. I wonder if southern states has any pepper and tomato plants left. It's pretty late in the season. Our plan is to work it every Tuesday and Thursday, weather permitting. It's something to occupy idle hands during the summer and teach the value of work.
